The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps, is a federally funded program that provides food assistance to low-income individuals and families. In New Mexico, SNAP is administered by the Human Services Department (HSD). To be eligible for SNAP in New Mexico, you must meet certain income and asset limits. You must also be a U.S. citizen or a qualified non-citizen, and you must live in New Mexico.
SNAP benefits can be used to purchase food at authorized retailers. SNAP benefits are deposited on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used like a debit card at grocery stores and other authorized retailers. SNAP is an important program that helps low-income individuals and families put food on the table. In fiscal year 2023, SNAP provided benefits to over 320,000 New Mexicans.
