Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin, a hormone that helps glucose enter cells for energy. This can lead to high blood sugar levels and, over time, type 2 diabetes.
There are many things that can contribute to insulin resistance, including obesity, physical inactivity, and a diet high in processed foods and sugary drinks. Insulin resistance is also more common in people with certain medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and Cushing’s syndrome.
